Key Competences for Lifelong Learning

The Lifelong Learning Platform, together with the contributions of its members, has developed a reaction to the review process of the Key Competences Framework.

The paper is a reaction to the review process of the European Framework for Key Competences for Lifelong Learning. Ten years after the release of this framework, the European Commission launched the review process of the Framework, as part of the New Skills Agenda for Europe initiative. The Lifelong Learning Platform acknowledges the importance of the common framework of crucial competences for life across Member States, presenting a step forward to a holistic approach to education and training.

However, the review presents key issues that need further attention, in order to make sure that education really complies to the societal needs, all across Europe. The Lifelong Learning Platform assesses the needs that are to be taken into consideration, with a special focus on:

  • empowerment of the individual learners
  • investing in the competences of teachers and educators
  • self-regulation skills
  • personal development of the learner
  • intercultural competences
  • balance towards assessment
  • implementation at national and local level
