Democracy International has launched on 20 February a European-wide campaign for a more democratic EU and a new European Convention. Democracy International conducted a public action in front of the EU Parliament in Brussels by giving passersby the VIP treatment, aimed to remind EU politicians that the citizens are in fact Very Important People, and that democratic reform is needed if the EU is to properly serve the interests of the people. This was followed by a press briefing where was officially launched an alliance of organisations (among which EUCIS-LLL) from all over Europe under the banner ‘Democratic Europe Now’. Together, the group is calling for an EU Convention under Article 48 of the Lisbon Treaty, so that proposals for democratic and other reform can be debated in an open forum.
