LLLAwards2017: Education in a Digital World
The LLLAwards aim to celebrate outstanding initiatives in favour of pushing LLL policy forward, building inclusive societies and making lifelong learning a reality for all. The Awards celebrate educational practices from all over Europe that can demonstrate the use of creative and inclusive learning methods with outstanding results and the potential to be replicated and/or of inspiring others. The Award is not limited to a particular sector, since the Platform believes lifelong learning covers education and training across all ages and in all areas of life be it formal, non-formal or informal and shall enable citizens’ emancipation as a framework for personal development and well-being and citizens’ full participation in society in its civic, social and economic dimensions.
For the 2017 edition, the Awards will celebrate “Education in a Digital World”. A Jury of experts will be responsible to evaluate the practices we received. This year, the Lifelong Learning Platform aimed at having three distinct profiles for the Jury. We wanted to have representatives of the European institutions, because we want a strong link with the policy being developed at institutional level. Two experts also come from the world of academia, because of their exceptional curricula in the study of lifelong learning and education in a digitalised era. Finally, two representatives stem from the galaxy of Civil Society Organisations: because the LLLAwards are a recognition to civil society, and NGOs deserve to be represented in the Jury as well.

MEP Emilian Pavel
Emilian Pavel is a Member of the European Parliament since 2014, working in the Committee of Employment and Social Affairs, and the Committee of Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. He is also a member of the Delegation for relations with Israel, Delegation to the EU-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee, Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean. His priorities in the European Parliament include Digital Agenda, youth entrepreneurship and employability, lifelong learning and education. In the beginning of 2017, he was chosen as MEP of the year for Employment and Social Affairs. He is the president of the Friends of Serbia informal group and an ambassador for the European Entrepreneurship Education Network. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in computer engineering and a Master’s Degree in environmental protection. He has been involved in politics for over 15 years and he is one of the Vice Presidents of the Young Romanian Social Democrats organisation. He has held various positions within the Social Democratic party at regional and national level, and has acted as Director in the Romanian Ministry for Youth and Sport.
Indre Vareikyte is a member of the European Economic and Social Committee, working in the fields of education and training, digital agenda, gender equality and media freedom. Prior to this position she has led one of the largest non-governmental organisations in Lithuania. For her achievements Indre was awarded with the Lithuanian Youth Leader of the year 2008 and Lithuanian Youth Ambassador of the year 2010 awards, and received an Award by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Lithuania for the personal contribution to the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of European Union in 2013. She holds degrees in Educational Sciences and Journalism, and uses every Life Long Learning opportunity to further increase her competencies.
Ilse Mariën is working as a senior researcher at imec-SMIT, a research centre attached to the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) where she has been involved in several projects related to digital inequalities, e-skills and other policy aspects related to digital media. For the moment, she is leading a 4-year federal research project – IDEALiC – that aims at setting the future scene of e-inclusion policies in Belgium at a local, regional and federal level. In 2016, she successfully defended her Ph.D. that entails (1) a more contextualised and comprehensive theoretical framework for digital inequalities; and (2) a concise strategic framework for developing sustainable e-inclusion policies. It is based upon a critical analysis of the transition in digital divide theory; the relation between digital and social exclusion; the approach used in grassroots initiatives; and existing digital inclusion policies. As such, Ilse’s doctoral research project also examines if and how low media literacy levels relate to mechanisms of digital and social exclusion. In addition, it examines the informal learning settings, methods and practices that are used by grassroots initiatives to enhance the development of media literacy amongst at-risk groups. Mart Laanpere is Senior Researcher in the Centre for Educational Technology at Tallinn University, Institute of Digital Technologies. Mart is an experienced lecturer, an educational technologist and a researcher. He is a co-founder of the Centre for Educational Technology, which is an international research group within the Institute, currently he is coordinating the ERA Chair project CEITER in Tallinn University. His research interests are related with designing innovative online learning environments, school-level educational innovation, instructional design, learning analytics, assessment of digital competences and supporting professional development of teachers with e-portfolio. He has been the convenor of EERA network on Open Learning and an contributing to e-learning development in various countries, such as Georgia, Moldova, Palestine, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Senegal, Croatia and Serbia. Mart is a member of the steering group of the Estonian Strategy of Lifelong Learning 2014 – 2020. He holds a degree in educational technology (M. Sc) from the University of Twente, the Netherlands and Ph.D. degree in educational science from the Tallinn University.
Giuseppina is a member of the Steering Committee of the Lifelong Learning Platfrom. Coming from the experience of student activism on a local, national and transnational level, her main field of interest is social inclusion throughout education paths, non formal education and global citizenship development. Passionate about programmatic actions, Giuseppina is a project manager and trainer in different platforms and organisations. Recently she has been involved in the Selection Committee of the Seeds for Integration programme for the inclusion of young migrants and refugees promoted by OBESSU, as well as several consultation on youth work on a Italian and Transnational level. Keyword for her in life is “objective-led”.
Engineer, consultant and trainer, author of the National Pt Learning Working Group, and Lifelong Learning activist. Etelberto Costa is Member of Futurália strategic council and Ambassador of the European platform for adult education (EPALE). Member of European Working Groups for the Future of Learning and ET 2020. Member of the editorial board of Pessoal magazine (PT) and the Learning Magazine. In November 2014 he edited the Book Formation or Learning: change of paradigm (co-author wit Phd Maria José Sousa).
