18th of November 2019, Sanremo
On occasion of the launch of the Education Inspiring Peace Laboratory (EIP Lab) the 3rd FREREF Day, organized in collaboration with the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, will take placein Sanremo (Italy) on 18 November 2019, and will focus on “An Active European Citizenship to Build Peace”. The FREREF day will offer the opportunity to education professionals and stakeholders to discuss the role of “citizenship” as one of the main positive driver of peace building.
The EIP Lab, spin-off of the project “systemic UPscaling of Peace Education pRactices – UPPER”, coordinated by FREREF within the framework of the EU programmeErasmus+, intends to develop a set of key tools for all the European and global stakeholders working in the field of education, to encourage and foster conditions for peace inside and outside the school environment, as well as inspiring an active and responsible citizenship starting with the students themselves. A responsible citizenship, as well as the ability to live together peacefully, within and outside the European borders, are nowadays threatened by different hazards such as the rise of nationalism, phenomena of radicalization and disaffiliation, the massive flux of migrants arriving to the European Continent, somehow precursors of “climatic migrations”. For these reasons, “citizenship” becomes a new and transformative skill which needs to be assimilated, developed and fostered
It is thus possible to reflect on and discuss necessary conditions to build an active European citizenship through the analysis of three main prisms:
- The hybridization of cultures (migrations, evolution of work …)
- Transformative skills (adaptability, innovation, intercultural skills …)
- Actions for peace (working together to build peace, education for peace …)

Apart from the key role of education in building responsible citizens, participants of the FREREF day will also be invited to think on the potential commitment of other stakeholders of our society and to consider their possible role in promoting conditions for peace. This will be possible through further discussion on the approach to these issues of economic and social actors.
The 2019 Freref Day will be also the occasion to launch a round of territorial peer-learning sessions on the theme of transversal skills.
